Airborne Elderberry

My Role

This campaign promoted the new elderberry-flavored version of Airborne’s immune system support supplement. The goal was to make consumers aware of it in the first place, but also to show that the new product would maintain Airborne’s familiar reputation. The idea to have the two bottles morph from one to the other via a spin is a great way to show this, but it was impossible to achieve without incorporating 3D models and animation, or using actual footage of the bottles spinning – neither of which existed. I had to make known that the idea the brand representatives had been sold on was a technical impossibility and come up with the closest possible substitute to reach the campaign goal.

I used Photoshop to isolate and prep the assets, After Effects to build both animations, and Premiere to layer in music and audio effects.

The Process

Organization

The first thing to do was to organize the assets into usable files. I received a storyboard showing the process of the animation, but not assets conducive to hitting the board's key frames. This involved some back and forth and emergency surgery on a hi-res 300x250 Photoshop master file.

Animation

With proper working files set up at the necessary 1:1 and 16:9 ratios, I was able to create the animations. There are the obvious word and bottle transitions but also some subtle background animation - trees blowing in the wind, etc.

Final mastering

When the animations were finalized, I then edited them in Premiere for the last step, adding and editing audio. There were several songs to try, as well as some audio effects for the background and bottle spinning. Premiere is quick and precise with audio placement and swapping.
