This was an Instagram Feed post promoting the Durex brand with a target release date of April 20 (420, maaaaan!). This idea was perfect for Durex to use in trying to engage with their younger target audience, which was the goal. I had to find a balance in the imagery as I sourced photos and animated. Obviously the implication was about smoking weed, but to show a joint or hemp leaves, etc. would associate the brand with drug use. There is actually no mention of any drugs or drug paraphernalia in the animation or post caption, but the idea gets across with no question.
I used Photoshop to prep all the source imagery and After Effects for the animation.
Most of the direction for this post came through conversations with my social media manager, but we were also toying with the idea of using a calendar to call attention to the date also. Here are some messy "storyboard" sketches from the very beginning of the campaign.
I collected assets and arranged the layout while thinking of all the layers in three dimensions. The layers are delineated here, each with a blue stroke. The first version of the layout used food images that showed other brands' logos, but that didn't fly because of the weed association.
The dimensional consideration worked to my advantage, because it allowed me to set the elements up in such a way as to incorporate the camera's depth of field to affect focus. I also overlaid some footage of smoke in the frame to give the viewer on more hint as to the meaning of the word "binge" in the copy.
