This was a spec piece used to test the production and serving of a first-to-market ad unit called a “launchpad.” This type of unit proved to be very attractive to many clients from a number of industries, because it allowed more of a full screen experience than a more traditional fixed footer. My role was to work with the development team to help come up with the technical specifications, and I also went on to design and produce the unit.
I used Photoshop for the design and layout, After Effects to key and prep some footage, Animate to actually build the unit, and JavaScript for animation and tracking.
I used the website inspection tool to collect assets from the official website for the game (because this was just a spec piece, approval wasn’t necessary). The assets ended up being perfect, because they were already transparent PNG files which saved me some time converting them.
I adapted the traditional view of the original Donkey Kong game by effectively giving the viewer more of a first person point of view as Kong rolls his barrels. This was a combination of some keyable footage, an animated GIF, and a little Photoshop work.
I built the collapsed and expanded states of the unit in Animate. There is only one single frame for each state, because I animated all the elements using JavaScript. This allowed smoother animation using a lower framerate. The code window is also where I inserted all the tracking snippets.
